February Worthwhile Stuff

📚 Books
A Reliable Wife, Robert Goolrick: I actually read this book last month, but I found myself thinking of it often this month, including while reading an Agatha Christie book (Death on the Nile). This is one of those books that the less you know about it, the better. It’s an atmospheric thriller set in the early 1900s, and I recommend setting aside a weekend for it: it’s a 1 to 2 day book with great momentum, and it's full of haunting details, as well as a memorable, yet small, cast of characters.

🎶 Music
"Glad You Exist", Dan + Shay
: A simple, yet sweet and comforting, song that showcases warm guitar strumming and classic Dan + Shay harmonies.

Medicine At Midnight, Foo Fighters: My favorite Foo Fighters album (and the only one I owned for many, many years) is There Is Nothing Left to Lose, which of course contains the indelible "Learn to Fly", "Aurora", and "Next Year". While I admire Dave Grohl as a musician and as a person, I had found many Foo Fighters albums skewed a bit too far toward hard rock or being overly scream-y for my day-to-day listening pleasure. However, I am very happy to report that Medicine at Midnight is an enjoyable, solid rock album with understandable lyrics through and through. Every one of the nine songs on this album is thoughtfully written, performed, and sung. "Love Dies Young" is an instant classic in my book, but other standout tracks include the psychedelic "Chasing Birds" (which feels like a follow-up to Concrete and Gold's "The Sky Is A Neighborhood"), "Waiting on a War", and the QOTSA-esque title track "Medicine at Midnight". As soon as concerts are a thing again, the Foos will be high on my list of bands to see live.
