Walking to the subway down the main street of the safely eclectic neighborhood, she wondered about the seemingly secret home lives of friends and acquaintances: Where did they shop? What did they eat for dinner on a typical night at home? These were things never discussed over dinner at the new trendy restaurant, while savoring the new popular latte or cocktail, or while making tea in the office kitchen.
She doubted cheese toast, bagels, popcorn, and cereal also made up the diets of her friends and coworkers. And yet this question of personal food choices was just that - personal. Something of one's own in a city of constant sharing and personal space under attack. Her Trader Joe's spoils were her own unique collection, saying just as much about who she is as the book thrown on top of the groceries carefully packed into her large reusable tote bag or the music that fills her earbuds as she passes through the sliding doors into the cool night.
