This is the second year in a row that March is not only the month of my birth, but also bucket-list-check-off and prior-year-vacation-use month. Last year I got to fulfill my dreams of seeing Garth Brooks live in concert and staying at Wynn Las Vegas. This year I am going to London for a very quick weekend to see The Music Lesson, the Vermeer owned by the Queen of England which I have tried and failed twice to see previously - once at Windsor Castle in 2007 and once at Buckingham Palace in 2009. It seems the old girl likes to move the painting around quite a bit, and of course Buckingham is only open in the summer, and I never travel abroad during that season because getting to my domestic summer house is hassle enough.
Fortunately, Dulwich Picture Gallery, as part of its 200th birthday celebrations, will be displaying The Music Lesson for the month of March, and after that, G-d willing, I will have seen all the Vermeers outside of the ones in Germany. This means 2012's or 2013's major vacation will most likely be a Vermeer-based tour of Germany, something to which I am very much looking forward.
